Operation Christmas Child 2004

While Irish children eagerly await the excitement of opening their presents on Christmas morning, thousands of children across the world have had their lives torn apart by conflict, poverty and disaster. For these children there is little to look forward to.

Operation Christmas Child brings joy and hope to children in desperate situations around the world through gift filled shoe boxes sent with love.

Last year an incredible 200,000 shoe boxes were sent from Ireland packed full of gifts for children in Eastern Europe and further afield.

Bernie Delaney, a volunteer for Operation Christmas Child, came to our school early in October and showed us a video explaining all about the project. She told us all about what to do and where our shoe boxes would go, answering any questions the children had.

These are the instructions that were given to the children who wanted to take part;

  • Find an empty shoe box; wrap it in Christmas paper covering the lid separately.

  • Decide whether it was for a boy or a girl and what age range it would be suitable for.

  • Fill your shoe box with a variety of gifts e.g. toys, colouring things, copies, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, cards, jewellery, and sweets.

  • Include a photograph of yourself and a Christmas card if you like.

  • Enclose €3 in the envelope provided to cover the transport costs of the boxes.

  • Bring the boxes back to school by the 5th of November when Bernie would return to collect them.

This is the second year Callystown National School has been involved and the response has been extraordinary. 221 shoe boxes were sent from our school to bring smiles and laughter to children thousands of miles away.

We would like to say a huge ‘Thank You’ to all the children and parents who gave so generously. Your kindness will bring Christmas joy to millions of children and their families across the world.
